During the Edo period, cats were an integral part of the lives of common people, widely kept as pets and mousers. They also frequently appeared in ukiyo-e and literature, leading to the development of a unique cat culture. Among the townspeople of Edo, it was believed that “cats bring good fortune,” and in merchant houses, keeping cats was thought to “lead to prosperous business,”which fostered the development of the beckoning cat culture.
