The keeping of goldfish also spread among the common people during the Edo period, leading to the development of a unique Japanese goldfish culture. In the towns of Edo, goldfish selers walked around, and townspeople began to enjoy goldfish casually. Many of the varieties seen today were created during this period. Ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Kitagawa Utamaro also left behind works incorporating goldfish.
